[ARCHIVED] City of Schenectady Announces Completion of New Facility at Central Park Greenhouse

Annual Plant Sale Scheduled for Friday, May 20th and Saturday, May 21st

Today the City of Schenectady announced the completion of a new storage facility at the Sustainable Living Center in Schenectady’s Central Park. Mayor Gary McCarthy joined State Senator Jim Tedisco, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schenectady County (CCESC), and Friends of the Greenhouse (FOGH) to unveil the new facility before the Annual Master Gardener’s Plant Sale.

The new storage facility was funded by a $50,000 grant from State Senator James Tedisco, and a $12,500 grant from the Carlilian Foundation. The City of Schenectady Department of General Services provided significant in-kind services for the construction of the facility. The new building will replace two smaller structures and will allow for the storage of various equipment, tools, supplies, and materials in a secure location and out of the weather.

“We are proud to unveil this new facility at the Sustainable Living Center in Schenectady’s Central Park,” Mayor McCarthy said. “Thank you to Senator Tedisco, the Carlilian Foundation, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Friends of the Greenhouse volunteers and our dedicated city workers who invested significant time and effort into this latest addition to the Sustainable Living Center.”

"I’m proud to have helped obtain a $50,000 state grant for the Sustainable Living Center and Central Park Greenhouse's new storage facility,” said Senator Jim Tedisco. “Central Park in Schenectady is an incredible jewel to visit, recreate and enjoy nature and this new facility will help safeguard the storage of important tools and equipment to help maintain this incredible asset for all to enjoy. I was happy to work with Mayor McCarthy and the City, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schenectady County and Friends of the Greenhouse to make this a reality."

"The new storage facility is a much-needed and long-awaited addition to the Sustainable Living Center,” said Angela Tompkins, CCESC Program Coordinator. “This facility will not only provide aesthetic appeal but will protect the equipment and supplies from weather damage and provide safe and organized access."

The Sustainable Living Center located in Schenectady’s Central Park is operated by CCESC for horticultural education programs. FOGH was created in 2015 to help maintain and improve the facility. FOGH initiated a series of strategic planning sessions to help develop a master plan that would address the needs of the facility. One of the major components was the need for a new permanent storage building that would replace the existing smaller structures that were insufficient in size, access, and lighting.

The Annual Master Gardner’s Plant Sale hosted by CCESC will occur on Friday, May 20, 2022 from 12:00pm – 6:00pm and on Saturday, May 21, 2022 from 12:00pm – 4:00pm. Visit their website for the full list of plants and vegetables available for sale:
