Plumber's Helper

There is one full-time opening for a permanent Plumber's Helper position in the Water Department.  The starting salary is $40,485.

 Job Description/Minimum Qualifications:

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  

This is skilled work involving responsibility for efficient performance of a variety of plumbing, maintenance and steam fitting tasks requiring a thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed from the Plumber and/or the head of the Water Department.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Aids and assists the Plumber with the following:

            Water meter reading, installation, maintenance and replacement;

Does wet taps on City water mains (1inch);

Installs and repairs fixtures such as lavatory facilities, drinking fountains and sprinkler systems;

Maintains and repairs plumbing in municipal owned buildings;

Inspects installation plumbing work within the jurisdiction;

Repairs and maintains water pumping station and reservoir;

Cuts, bends, threads and assembles pipes;

Installs and repairs pipes and valves in heating systems;

Maintains tools to keep them in good working order; i.e.: tapping machines;

Clears stoppages in waste, sub soil and other drains;

Repairs and installs steam equipment.

Does work in other trades occasionally;

Performs a variety of related work as required.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions; familiarity with local plumbing ordinances;  good motor and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(A)   Completion of a trade school specializing in plumbing and one year of experience as a Master plumber; OR

(B)   Two years of experience as a licensed plumber; OR

(C)   An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

 NOTE:  At the time of appointment, must present evidence of successful completion of the New York State Licensing Examination for Master Plumber.
