Overview
Historic preservation stabilizes neighborhoods, fosters economic development and helps residents and visitors understand our City's history. Schenectady is home to the first locally designated historic district in New York State, the Stockade Historic District, created in 1962. Since then, the City has designated four additional historic districts and three local landmarks. These historic resources have been identified as being significant to the history of Schenectady, the State of New York or the nation. Please visit the Historic District Commission webpage to learn more about the review process that may be required when making alterations to historic properties.
